In my previous blog I was talking about sleep, and it was so popular I’m back here to do a follow up. It’s not surprising to see how many people have sleeping issues. (If you haven’t read it already you can read it here.)
So, in this blog I will go more in depth about the natural treatment.
Most of us, who struggle to get a good night’s sleep, have tried some sort of sleeping pills … how good are they really?
The majority of sleeping pills are classified as sedative hypnotics. That’s a specific class of drugs used to induce and/or maintain sleep. They also increase drowsiness and help people sleep. While these drugs may be useful short-term, most of them are potentially addictive and can cause problems with memory and attention. Which is why natural supplements can come in handy.
But even with the natural supplements we really need to know what we’re taking and why are we talking them, and ultimately ‘what is causing the sleeping problem to begin with?’
There could be many things that can cause sleepless nights.
Is it anxiety, stress and depression? These are some of the most common causes of chronic insomnia. Other common causes for sleepless nights could be emotional struggles such as anger, worry, grief and trauma or physical issues like pain and hormones. Addressing the cause of the sleep issue is paramount to you getting a restful night sleep in the long term.
However, if you believe that stress or anxiety is the cause you can try meditation, yoga or anything that will be calming on the mind and body.
Using natural supplements can be very beneficial.
If you don’t like taking pills and you are tea lover, try having a cup of tea (tea like camomile, valerian, lemon balm, passionflower might be beneficial) an hour before bedtime.
Camomile has very calming effect on our body and decreases anxiety and improves sleep.
Valerian is sedative herb with calming and relaxing properties which is very helpful in treating problems like insomnia.
Lemon Balm has relaxing action to help relieve sleeplessness and restlessness.
Passionflower is such a beautiful herb that helps with sleep and anxiety. Studies show that Passionflower can help to boost the level of GABA in your brain. This compound (GABA) calms brain activity, which may help you relax and sleep better.
Keep in mind that while teas are effective, they are not as potent as the concentrated dose found in herbal supplements. If you’ve been struggling for a long time – a supplement might be the best option.
Magnesium is another beneficial supplement to improve sleep, as Magnesium deficiency is very common. This nutrient is necessary to produce our sleep and happy hormones while also acting as a muscle relaxant.
From tablets to creams there is so many to choose from, and so many different types of magnesium. (I’ve added the long list below). It’s best to chat with one of our practitioners to find the right one for you because they all have different purposes.
Here’s the list: magnesium glycinate, magnesium amino acid chelate, magnesium citrate, magnesium orotate, magnesium oxide, magnesium sulfate, magnesium malate, magnesium aspartate, magnesium sulfate, magnesium chloride.
